What is your GM style? Plus Dispel Dice Sets to match!

We’ve seen the YouTube videos; we’ve seen the Reddit threads. We know that the community is all about exploring what kind of GM they are, or want to become, in 2026. If you’re still not sure, we’ve put together a list of what we’ve found to be the most common GM styles, so you can see where you fit in. If we hit the nail on the head, feel free to treat yourself to a set of dice to match! So, what is your GM style?

1. The Improviser

You like to fly by the seat of your pants, and your players love you for it! You come to the table with a fleshed-out setting, and what your party does in that world is up to them. You’re always prepared with plenty of scenarios and random tables, pulling out what you need depending on what turns the story takes. The rules are loose, and you’ll let your players have their way if you feel like it will make the session more fun and the story more engaging. This is their journey, you’re just the facilitator along for the ride.

2. The Consequence Engine

Basically, you’re a realist. Your players and their characters can do what they like within the realm of possibility, but that doesn’t mean they’ll get away with it. If they decide to rob or kill a non-combatant NPC for loot, that’s good and fine. Will their characters get arrested or executed for disturbing the peace? Probably. Similarly, characters can get damage for everything from jumping from high places to hunting animals for food. They will get tired, hungry, and lose morale when it rains. You’ll take your players on the adventure of a lifetime, along with all the ups and downs that would come with it.

3. The Collaborator

You are a high-prep GM. You like an open world where your players have the freedom to do what they want, but you aren’t a big fan of the improvisation that usually goes with it. Your worlds are fully fleshed out and you have structured scenarios, encounters, merchants, and NPCs with quests for every location your party might want to visit. You love storytelling and worldbuilding just as much as your players and you want in on the fun too.

4. The Vibe Caster

You come prepared with a full theatrical experience for your players. It doesn’t matter what you’re playing, you’ll be there with the music, the sound effects, the voices, the themed snacks… You love to dress up for the occasion and encourage your players to do the same. You also like to include plenty of immersive and fun resources at the table. Maps, artwork, draw-your-character supplies, reference cards, themed dice, minis, and anything else you can think of to draw your players into the story as much as possible.

5. The Wild Ride

Only you know what’s coming. And that’s probably for the best, because your players won’t like a lot of what’s to come. Your adventures are so filled with twists, turns, chaos and complexity that your players never even notice they’re being railroaded. As soon as one encounter or jam-packed scenario ends, you hit them with another completely unexpected one. They’re on the edge of their seats gape-mouthed the whole session and you always end with a cliffhanger to leave them wanting more.

6. The Coach

You’re the kind of GM new players love, and you enjoy teaching new players the game. Your adventures are railroaded with small areas for improvisation by design. You nudge the party in the right direction to make sure they’re getting all the best loot, and the most fun side quests. You want them to succeed and to make sure the game creator’s story gets told in full. You like to take your time, allowing your players to ask as many questions as they need to and to explore every location to their heart’s content.

7. The Dictator

It sounds bad in writing, but there are many players out there who need and prefer structure. When you buy an RPG, you play it as it was designed to be played, from beginning to end. All the rules get followed, no exceptions. You only allow for improvisation when the rules call for it or encourage it. You believe that every game was designed and written a certain way for a reason, and you and your players want to respect that.
