Luxury DnD dice are more popular than ever, but one of the questions we get asked most frequently is: Are liquid core dice balanced? Considering all the different materials that go into making a beautiful set of dice, this is a legitimate concern. Today we’re breaking down what these dice are, what they’re made from and how we ensure that Dispel liquid core dice are balanced.
What are liquid core dice?
More traditional dice are solid all the way through. Whether they are carved from a material or created by pouring metal or resin into molds, they are solid all the way through. Historically this has been an extremely important feature. Material density needs to be perfectly balanced all the way through each die. The most reliable way to achieve this has always been to simply use only one material to create them.
Over the decades, however, dice makers have been creating dice that are more beautiful, immersive and fun. Now we add glitter, mica powder and tiny figurines into dice. We also make them by combining resin, wood and metal in creative ways. Through lots of work and experimentation, reliable dice makers are still serving balanced dice that look amazing.
Liquid core dice are made very similarly to any of the other dice we make. We create a liquid-filled sphere and place it perfectly in the center of a transparent shell, which we make with poured resin and other decorative materials. Each of our liquid core dice is hand created and hand-poured to ensure each piece is the pinnacle of both quality and beauty.
What is liquid core dice made out of?
At Dispel Dice, the shells are made from translucent hand-poured resin. These can also include pigments so that we can add some color or give the shells a color gradient. However, it is of the utmost importance that these shells are designed and then created to show off the liquid cores in all their beauty. We consider this at every stage of the process of designing the shells, from getting a bubble-free pour to applying the numbering.
Inside the shell is the hollow sphere. This is filled with distilled water, as well as all the magical elements that will be swirling around inside it with each roll. These can include pigments, glitter, mica powder and mylar inclusions. The ratios of each solution are carefully curated and controlled to get the exact effect we are looking for.
Each dice set is also hand-created, which means that every single one is one-of-a-kind, but each is just as beautiful as the last.
Are liquid core dice balanced?
The short answer? Yes! Liquid core dice are balanced. All of our liquid core dice sets are luxury sharp-edge dice. All sharp-edge dice increase randomness and fairness. Their edges prevent the dice from rolling around, bringing them to a stop very quickly so that the outcomes can have a more even distribution. This is why casinos only use sharp-edge dice.
What we love about liquid core dice is that even if the roll itself is over before you know it, the magic continues in the still swirling centre, without over-balancing the dice on a rounded edge. It’s purely there for your enjoyment.
If you’re still not convinced, simply use a dice tray. There are some players in the RPG community who are concerned about the balance of polyhedral dice in general, but still want to play with them. They use dice trays to ensure their dice come to a stop with the edge of the tray, rather than relying on the balance of the dice itself.
