Behind the Scenes of Dark Fairytale – A Dispel Dice Release
Hi folks! Karen here with some behind-the-scenes inspiration behind our latest Dispel release. Dark Fairytale is a curated collection of sharp edge dice rooted in the stories that have shaped our imaginations.
Fairytales hold a special place in my heart. Snow White was the very first book I remember reading as a child, and that sense of wonder and transformation is what we aimed to bottle into this collection.
Down the Rabbit Hole
Inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, this sky blue polyhedral dice set takes on the color of Alice's iconic dress. The white rabbit and other classic imagery from the story decorate the dice faces to bring a sense of surreal whimsy to any RPG tabletop.
Hunt of the Unicorn
This set draws its style from the 15th-century Unicorn Tapestries. These seven tapestries were created in the Southern Netherlands and depict noblemen and hunters pursuing the mythological unicorn through an idyllic French landscape. We've distilled that chase into a visual language of elegance and organic movement in this set of dark fantasy luxury dice.
Devour
The brainchild of Dispel’s designer, Xi, this set illustrates the tension between hunter and hunted. We really wanted to capture the age-old familiar dance between predator and prey. A wolf emerges from swirling gray mist and shadows, chasing a rabbit in the light across the surfaces of each die. It’s a dramatic addition to any tabletop dice collection.
Seafoam
Inspired by the tragic end of The Little Mermaid, this design captures her moment of sacrifice—dissolving into seafoam to save the prince. She loses her mortal form, but gains the opportunity to earn a soul through selfless good deeds. A quiet and melancholic set for seafaring RPG campaigns.
Tears of the Witch
This liquid core dice set is elegantly inked in gold and is inspired by the bitter tears of our fairytale villainesses. Bitterness and beauty collide in a swirling core that embodies both.
Rosewindow
Rosewindow is my favorite set in the drop. It is a 7-piece iconic sharp edge dice set inspired by the archetypal circular windows in gothic cathedrals. These massive stained glass structures were not simply used for their beauty and the way they refracted the light. Their symmetric nature symbolized balance, much like dice in our games and our lives.
Corpse Flower
The Titan Arum plant is a massive stinking lily which blooms infrequently and can be up to 10 feet tall. It derives its common name from the pungent scent it gives off to attract pollinators. Corpse Flower is a 7-Piece Liquid Core Dice Set with vivid, heat-soaked hues and a tropical aesthetic. It’s perfect for volcanic lairs, cursed ruins, sprawling jungles and any DnD setting where danger lies waiting.
Heartbloom
Heartbloom is inspired by ero guro illustrations and features blossoms carefully designed over anatomical depictions of hearts. This frosted transparent dice set is inked in matte red numbers to add some bloodiness to the iconography.
Harlequin
Harlequin is a 7-Piece Iconic Dice Set inspired by the romantic tricksters and jesters of old. Gold foil and vintage illustrations float atop an ivory core with matching numbers. With its playful elegance and theatrical flair, Harlequin is ideal for carnival cities, enchanted courts, and RPG settings where mischief and magic walk hand in hand.
