Frequently asked questions about premium dice from Dispel

Frequently asked questions about premium dice from Dispel

We make a lot of premium dice, and we get a lot of questions about all the dice here at Dispel. We thought we’d take some time to answer some of the most frequently-asked questions we get asked by our new and returning customers.

1. What are Dispel Dice made from?

There is a lot that goes into each set of Dispel Dice, but none of our designs would be possible without our resin base. Each die is made from premium resin that we proudly use and roll daily. Our resin is perfectly transparent to display inclusions with absolute clarity, and it also holds pigments and inclusions beautifully. Its quality also allows us to create dice with extra sharp edges, clear-cut numbers, and any other embossed textures and designs.

Depending on the design and theme of our dice sets, we also include pigments and ink, metal foils, glitters, mica powders, A/B coatings, and even real flowers.

2. Will my Dispel Dice yellow over time?

Even the highest-quality resin will take on a yellow or amber color over time for a number of reasons. UV light, heat and oxygen all degrade resin. While it’s possible to keep your dice safe from UV light and high temperatures, you will never be able to protect them from oxygen.

We have taken great care to source a premium resin. We’ve exposed it to direct sunlight outdoors for weeks and there was no significant yellowing. If you want your Dispel Dice to age well, there are some steps you can take to slow down yellowing. Do not expose your dice to direct sunlight, fluorescent lights, or grow lights for plants and reptile enclosures. You’ll also need to keep them away from any heat sources, including appliances.

While you can’t protect your dice from oxygen and natural aging forever, we always recommend keeping your dice in a closed container. Many of our loyal dice goblins use decorative jars and boxes, keep them closed in the velvet-lined packaging they come in, or use our clear modular display boxes.

3. What is AB coating?

AB coating or finishing is a popular technique in jewellery and rhinestone manufacturing. It stands for Aurora Borealis, because it adds a layer of iridescence that has a prism-like shimmer effect. Basically, it makes things more shiny and sparkly, and we love shiny, sparkly dice!

Because AB coatings have a rainbow shimmer, we unfortunately can’t use it on every set as it can make certain base colors look faded, or like they have a blue or pink holographic finish. But when you do see that a dice set has an AB finish, you know they’ll have been created with that in mind to the design, rather than take away from it.

4. What is mica powder?

Mica powder is a natural or synthetic silicate stone that is ground into an extremely fine, light-weight glittery dust. When they are blended with pigments, they add a satin, pearlescent effect to the color. We use it when we want our dice to catch the light more softly than they would with a metallic inclusion or ink. Mica powder is also a stunning inclusion in our liquid core dice sets and Chonk dice, where it swirls around mesmerizingly whenever the dice are rolled.

5. Will the color of my Dispel Dice fade?

Everything from the resin to the pigments we use in our dice is premium quality, and has been chosen with colorfastness in mind. However, as resin naturally yellows as it ages, you will notice that the color of your dice will take on the same amber hue. Much like resin, most pigments and inks are also very sensitive to UV light, so you can protect the color of your dice at the same time as you’re protecting them from yellowing.

If you want to display your dice, you may want to consider showing them off in UV-protected display boxes, jars or cases. You should be especially careful to preserve your limited edition sets, as these cannot be replaced.

6. Are Dispel Dice balanced?

We have made sure that all of our dice are balanced for RPG and boardgame tabletop play. Firstly, our premium-quality resin can be molded with incredible detail. They are as sharp-edged as resin dice can get. This gives them a fast, hard stop when they hit the surface they’re being rolled on for more fair and balanced play. In addition to this, we make sure the inclusions used in our dice are as close in weight as possible to the resin they’re suspended in, and they don’t create any significant balance issues.

It is important to note, however, that our dice have not been balanced for high-stakes gambling or casino play, and should not be used for such.

7. Why are Dispel Dice so expensive?

This is probably one of the questions we get asked the most frequently. There is a lot that goes into every set of Dispel Dice that determines their price.

Each and every set of dice is meticulously designed according to a theme, event, collaboration or real life inspiration. These designs are all prototyped by hand so we can ensure that every collection and dice set we release can be produced as beautifully as the first.

We also source only the best materials for our dice. They are all made from premium-quality resin, instead of acrylic like many other dice sets on the market. Resin allows us to get sharper edges on our dice, and to work with more detailed molds. While this is also possible with metal and wood dice, we prefer to use resin because it is transparent. You need a clear base to use and see beautiful inclusions like flowers and shimmers, as well as our famous swirling liquid cores. Resin is far more expensive than acrylic, but the cost is worth it for us if it means we’re getting better balanced dice, where every piece can be an intricate piece of tiny art.

We don’t only look for the best quality in our resin. We also need to use pigments and inks that are colorfast and won’t fade for a very long time.

Lastly, even though our dice are produced in a factory, they are still produced at a small scale and each and every piece is hand-poured with care. This means that every single Dispel die is created and quality checked by humans through every step of the process. As an extra bonus, having hand-poured dice means that every set is unique and one-of-a-kind.

8. Why does my Dispel Dice Set look different from the photos?

We try to represent our dice as accurately as possible on our website and social media channels. We photograph them under a selection of lighting conditions and we provide videos of as many sets as possible, so you can get an even better look.

There are, however, still two factors that could contribute to your set looking different from product and marketing photos. Firstly, every single piece is hand-poured, so every single Dispel Dice set is unique and one-of-a-kind. Because they are not mass produced, every set will have slight variations in color and inclusion suspensions.

Secondly, different display settings on your screen can distort the way color and contrast look on our images and videos. No matter what you’re shopping for, always make sure you have night mode and any auto/AI screen calibration settings turned off. Make sure your brightness, contrast and hue settings are set to medium. Settings that are too high can make colors look brighter than they are, and wash them out if set too low.

9. What games can I use jewel dice for?

You can use our Jewel Dice for any game that requires D2, D4, D6 and/or D12 dice. They’re unconventional, but we wanted to create something for gamers looking to add a gorgeous and distinctive flair to their RPG sessions. Plus, the unique shape of Jewel Dice actually makes your dice rolls even more random!

10. How should I store my Dispel Dice?

To keep your Dispel Dice looking as good as possible for as long as possible, they need to be stored and used correctly. As mentioned above, resin dice should always be stored at room temperature or below, and away from any heat sources. They should also never be displayed in direct sunlight or under fluorescent lights for long periods of time.

We also recommend displaying your dice in closed display boxes. This will prevent the buildup of dirt and dust in the embossed numbers and designs. Make sure they are displayed and stored in a secure spot where they won’t get knocked down to prevent chips and cracks. For the same reason, you should also always roll your dice on a padded dice tray, cloth or neoprene mat.

11. Do Dispel Dice need to be cleaned?

For the most part, Dispel Dice don’t need to be cleaned unless they’re especially dirty. If there is dirt in the numbers and embossed designs, use a soft toothbrush and warm soapy water to remove the buildup. They will also need to be washed in warm soapy water if there are spills and crumbs on the gaming tables. Always make sure they are fully dry before packing them away to prevent mold growth and water stains.

If they don’t need to be washed, we recommend buffing them with a soft cloth to remove fingerprints and make sure they are nice and shiny once again before they go back on display or into storage. Then your dice will be ready to go the next time you play.

12. Will sold out dice designs get restocked?

Yes and no!

We plan to restock all of our legacy designs regularly. Unfortunately, since all our dice are hand-crafted and contain inclusions that may not always be available, we are unable to provide firm dates for restocks.

Many Dispel Dice sets are limited edition sets, which means once they’re gone, they’ll never be available again. Due to quick sell-outs and many people not able to get our limited edition dice in time, we make sure all of our limited edition dice are available for a prolonged preorder window.

If there is a previous limited edition set that you would love to get your hands on, we host dice swaps as many of the cons and events we attend, so make sure you’re there and you might just get lucky!

You can sign up for our emails for restock, preorder and dice swap announcements.
